Well, before some of you have a heart attack, I am not talking about me! This is how our story begins....... It was a quiet evening at the Sikorski house (hahahahaha.......for anyone who has ever been at our house, you know it is anything but quiet, right? But for the sake of the story, I shall continue). The rain had been pleasantly coming all day. No thunderstorms, just a steady pleasant rainfall. Supper was finished, dishes were being washed when all of a sudden we hear a loud crashing sound outside. We all run to see what happened and this is what we saw.....
A very large tree branch had fallen!!! Too bad it didn't fall on the van, huh? LOL! Anyways, back to my story....... Daddy and Austin went to go check out what had happened when they hear little screaching sound. They found 3 little, tiny, eyes-not-even-open, baby squirrels! Of course Austin, being the animal lover that he is, had to show Mommy. I found a box and old towel to put them in and we brought them inside. We were saddened (doesn't he look sad?) to know that 1 of them was already dead, either from the fall or the cold.

Baby #2 was definately alive and #3 we just weren't sure about.
I called a lady here in town who takes care of wildlife and she instructed us how to keep them warm through the night and to take them to the University of Tenessee in the morning to their small animal and exotics office. Come morning, we realized that baby #3 was definately dead, so we put him outside too, but baby #2 was still very much alive.
Jared had a dr's appointment this morning which is near the UT drop off, so Austin was able to miss about an hour of school to take baby squirrel to his new rehab.

Austin has such a heart for little creatures, wether it is a turtle, frog, fish or baby squirrel. I know the Lord put this love in his heart and I wonder if he will, one day, be an animal doctor.

And of some have compassion,
making a difference:

Oh, that is such a sweet story, and little Austin is so sweet! I cried!
Hi, Busy Lady! My boys will find it neat that ya'll have experienced baby squirrels too.
Your first school pics are good. Poor Sarah Joy... another experience we've shared with Jon Paul not too long ago.
Did ya'll get a new van?
Praying for baby Jared. "Talk" to you soon.
How sweet! He's a boy after my own heart!!! I would have done the same thing only my box may have had a little ruffled bed spread in it, a small bowl of cashews, and a framed picure of 'fran' from the Higgly Town Heros on Disney (fran is the squirrel;)...ok...wow...now I'm a little concerned for myself!! lol...Austin is such a sweet boy!~heidi
